To make the European rail network fit for more traffic, we must make sufficient, continuous investment in maintaining and expanding it.
But just how much are national governments spending?
According to research carried out by the Pro-Rail Alliance, which analysed what certain European countries spent in rail infrastructure in 2023, investments ranged between a minimum of €51 to a maximum of €512 per citizen.
As you can see in the graph below, ScanMed RFC countries can be divided into two categories. Italy, Germany, and Denmark spent below average (around €90-€135 per capita), while Norway, Sweden, and Austria spent well above it (around €275-€335 per capita).
