Due to the derailment of a freight train between Brenner and Steinach (among Gries and St. Jodok) on the evening of December 22nd, the line is currently completely closed.
Due to the winter weather conditions (frost) and the location of the accident site in an inaccessible area, the repair work is difficult and takes longer than initially forecast. The removal of the accident site and the reconstruction of the line can only be carried out by rail.
Work is running 24/7. The reconstruction of the track (2.500m) as well as of the catenary started yesterday and is progressing well.
ÖBB Infrastructure plans to put one piece of the track back into operation on January 4th, presumably at noon (12h00). The second track is supposed to be accessible again on January 8th.
The diversion traffic runs mainly along the Tauern axis. Individual trains could also be re-routed via Switzerland.
