The construction of the future German rail access to the Fehmarn Belt tunnel is officially underway!
On December 7, representatives from Deutsche Bahn, Land Schleswig-Holstein, German Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport, and the European Commission, which are jointly investing around 3.5 billion euros in this critical EU infrastructure project, declared the works open. We congratulate our member DB Netz AG and Deutsche Bahn on the exciting news!
The rail tracks will connect Lübeck to Puttgarden and represent an integral part of the Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link. Once the infrastructure is ready, trains will avoid a 160-km long detour through Denmark, significantly improving connections between Scandinavia and continental Europe and boosting rail freight along our Corridor. The Fehmarn Belt Fixed Link is scheduled to open in 2029.
You can find further information on the project here as well as on Deutsche Bahn’s website (German only) here.
