“Mobility is at the heart of our Union.”
With these words, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Tuesday entrusted Commissioner-designate Apostolos Tzitzikostas with the role of Commissioner for Sustainable Trasport and Tourism.
In her mission letter, the President reiterates transport’s crucial role for EU competitiveness, the green and digital transitions, and territorial cohesion.
Accordingly, she tasks the future Commissioner to:
- Ensure the completion of the TEN-T
- Strengthen the Single Market for transport services
- Focus on the investment needs to strengthen the sector’s competitiveness
- Put forward a plan for a European high-speed rail network to connect EU capitals and accelerate rail freight
- Work on a Sustainable Transport Investment Plan to scale-up and prioritise investments in transport decarbonisation solutions
- Continue the digitalisation of the transport system, including the deployment of ERTMS
- Support military mobility projects
… and more!
ScanMed RFC congratulates Mr Tzitzikostas on his appointment and welcomes the spirit and content of President von der Leyen’s mission letter. The priorities listed above are of the outmost importance if we are to achieve a sustainable, resilient, and smart transport network with rail at its core. We look forward to continue cooperating with the Commission to develop a more competitive rail freight sector!
