On Friday, September 8, the European Commission published a package of revised technical standards to improve rail interoperability across borders – the so-called “Technical Specifications for Interoperability” (TSIs).
This implementing act, i.e., a regulatory update reflecting developments in a particular sector or ensuring its proper implementation, represents a key milestone toward smooth cross-border rail traffic and a boost to sectoral innovation.
The revised TSIs, entering into force on September 28, will:
- Modernise and harmonise current technical standards for rail, aligning them with TEN-T requirements
- Introduce a common framework for technical and operating conditions for ERTMS and combined transport
- Lead to automatic train operations over ERTMS
- Digitalise technical and operating information for train drivers and rail staff
