Linda continues: We now have a Task Force with a common approach, focusing on the short term, concrete actions, using existing tools and possibilities, and by working together and finding smart and new solutions to improve the situation at the Brenner Axis. We can make a huge difference by taking small steps. The situation is urgent and we need to do something now and show results so that we can keep and increase the volumes of goods on the rail on the Brenner Axis.
Since 1998, freight transport via the Brenner Pass has increased by about 50 %: 2.4 million trucks cross the Brenner Pass every year. The citizens in this area have raised issues about pollution and long ques on the road. The customers are facing issues with upholding existing freight traffic at this stretch. The situation is urgent and more relevant than ever, no one can wait until the Brenner Base Tunnel opens. If we are going to reach the climate goals and make Europe climate-neutral to 2050, the railway is an important part to make it possible.
ScanMed RFC, together with valued partners and stakeholders along the stretch, started a task force with the aim to see real changes in the next 2 years. The common goals for the Task Force are:
- Shift road traffic to the railway to the Brenner before and after the opening of the tunnel
- Improve the situation with capacity at terminals
- Improve quality and reliability in traffic
We will update on this very important topic and the work of the Task Force!
